From February 29, 2024 to April 27, 2024 the Town of Amherst&#39;s Recreation and Public Health departments will host a series of events and happenings to help spread kindness and foster mental wellness in our community. We&#39;re all familiar with the saying &ldquo;it&#39;s better to give than receive&rdquo;. What might surprise you is that this is actually backed up by research.People who are kind and compassionate experience clear benefits to their well-being and happiness. The Town of Amherst is launching a town-wide solar assessment. The Town has contracted GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA) to provide technical support throughout this process, that will include a survey, virtual and multiple in-person options for the community to engage and share their thoughts about solar development in Amherst.

Amherst Solar Assessment Project

The North Common is at the crossroads of Downtown Amherst. It is located at the center of our civic life. While the South Common provides a big open space for fairs, large gatherings and the Farmer’s Market, the North Common is a quieter, shaded, more intimate space. We want to make the North Common attractive and welcoming for residents and visitors alike, to bring people to Downtown Amherst, especially as we emerge from the effects of COVID-19, aiding the restaurants and retailers by providing an attraction to draw people to our Downtown.Nearly 8 years of work went into formulating a design for the North Commons, beginning in 2013 with multiple public forums, to concept designs in 2018, culminating in approval from Town Council on March 22, 2021 of a preliminary plan. On Monday, May 24th, the Town Council held a public hearing and confirmed their March 22 vote in favor of Plan 3B to convert the Main Street parking lot into a pedestrian plaza.In the coming months, Town staff will finalize the design for the North Common with opportunities for feedback and input from members of the public. North Common Revitalization Project

This 150-acre parcel is rich in natural beauty, ecological resources, and recreation opportunities with nearly 2 miles of the Fort River passing through, important open woodland habitat, and existing cart paths providing access throughout much of the land.The reasons for purchasing this land include the protection and restoration of vital natural resources, the opportunity for passive recreation, walking trails, and connectivity for the nearby residents to the Pomeroy Village Center, and the possibility for limited development along the road frontage. A solar energy array will be installed on parts of the land to produce clean, renewable energy and support important carbon mitigation goals. As the Town takes ownership over the Hickory Ridge, we will begin a master planning process to discern the land uses and activities which take place on this land.
