The Amherst African Heritage Reparation Assembly (AHRA) mission is to study and develop reparation proposals for People of African Heritage in Amherst to further the goals of the resolution “Affirming the Town of Amherst's Commitment to End Structural Racism and Achieve Racial Equity for Black Residents” adopted by the Town Council on December 7, 2020.

    Amherst Reparations Town Hall: Building and Sustaining a Local Reparations Movement

    March 30th, 6:00-9:00pm

    The Powerhouse, Amherst College

    The Big Payback screening followed by a discussion with former Evanston Alderwoman Robin Rue Simmons who led the country’s first-ever tax-funded municipal reparations bill for Black Americans and whose journey is documented in the film. Joining the discussion will be Mike Jirik, the Racial History of Amherst College Research Fellow.

    The Massachusetts Municipal Association recently did a spotlight feature in their December issue of The Beacon covering the work of the town's African Heritage Reparations Assembly. As the second community in the country to establish a fund addressing the historical and ongoing damage of structural racism, the town of Amherst has since been examining what a reparations program could look like at the municipal level.
